A Talk about the Four Bodhisattva Vows

I attended a small Buddhist get-together today in Tokyo. We did some zazen (Buddhist meditation), and afterwards our friend Yuko-sensei, a Japanese Buddhist nun, gave a talk in English about “The Four Boddhisatva Vows” and explained what the word “Bodhisattva” means.

The Four Boddhisattva Vows are:
  • Beings are numberless; I vow to free them.
  • Delusions are inexhaustible; I vow to end them.
  • Dharma gates are boundless; I vow to enter them.
  • The Buddha way is unsurpassable; I vow to realize it.
Yuko-sensei gave us a one page handout with the Four Bodhisattva Vows in English and Japanese, as well as an older version of the English translation of the vows. You can download a PDF file of the handout here.

I recorded Yuko-sensei’s talk on my audio recorder (about 25 minutes). You can download a recording of the talk here (MP3 file (25 MB)).
